I like country music and I loved this fine little memory you shared with us. It took me back to my own childhood fantasies with singers. I won't tell you which ones I drooled over, because that would give away my age. But -- there is a story everywhere, Alicia, and you dredged up a good one. Thank you. Two thumbs up.

Thank you, Sharron! Those childhood crushes are so fun. I also remember thinking the voices on the radio literally lived inside the radio.

Miley’s down-to-earth nature is most admirable. - As, your epic crush on Billy Ray is adorable, I wish you the chance to meet one day no matter circumstances. How next-gen spouse happens, I don’t quite get - though I’ve seen it! Oddly, I did just get eggplant pics from a very next-gen ex-neighbor (?🤯?), declined years ago. Maybe he was watching Billy Ray on TV, then decided on a Marino Marini hail mary. - Plant and roots are essential dealmaker factors!!! I do try to aim for a prince born before my first period (post June 85’ I have concern as to why?, and vice versa). Is that weird? I have no idea. Anyway, happy eggplant season, Alicia, may you reach out and cuff someone with substance and heart.

For your love of country music, your line “I’d borrow a quarter and place a call, but the pay phones have all disappeared.” brings to mind Cowboy Mouth lyrics: “It’s 4am. I’m drunk and alone, trying to call you on a public phone.” Light It On Fire should be the theme song of the French Quarter. Drama city! I would see them play once or twice a month in Tipitina’s with a the same pack of pals. Love it when they visit San Francisco, along with Galactic and Rebirth Brass. 💜💚💛 I need live music plans! But, I have 2025 Mardi Gras plans to make. My mom and my aunt went out for casino and cocktails, one more than necessary. Waking in the hotel, my aunt said, “Did I sign us up for a Mardi Gras Krew?” My mom said, “uh, yes ... ya did!” So, I have V.I.P. family members to see on their parade day. Laissez les bons temps rouler! May Eros be with me! ✨💖✨ cheers, dawl! 🎊

Haha, eggplant season! I love it. I agree that Miley is down-to-earth, which is impressive as she also pulls off the classic rock star look. She purposely avoids the mega tours and opts for more intimate venues, etc. Any girl who has Dolly Parton as a godmother is going to be a good egg!

I love those Cowboy Mouth lyrics and need live music plans as well! Woke up this morning to the news another one of my favorite country music legends, Toby Keith, passed away yesterday. He had such a voice.

May eros be with you indeed! I'm still not sure I'm up for love right now but a casino and cocktails sounds lovely.

I would enjoy a Miley concert then. The Cure with Public Image Limited was my last mega tour, in kiddo living with parents time. When Anne Rice moved the October party to her St.Elizabeth’s home, steps from a house I rented, I felt disconnected by crowd complexity and want for a map. Mardi Gras is different, more an adventure of togetherness while wandering through chaos.

Have a fancy V-Day, even if you pass on the cuffing quest. I know what it’s like to need a lot of time, more than the majority, and then I’m picky no matter what the clock strikes. - Self gifts! That’s my angle. So far, I have a fresh stack of awesome fiction, a sparkling red heart hand bag, and I need one more V-Day delight. I self gift in threes 😎 just to make sure I have it right. Oh, there’s a reality dating TV show recording in the Marina this year; I thought of you and finding your Frenchie when I noticed the ad. Cheers! - I should post (write) now that CoCo is more stable. The backtrack video I did for post 7 had a lot of cough sound editing. Calling it dog Valentine’s Day! 🏹🐶💘🏹

The "togetherness" aspect really makes the concert, doesn't it? I'm not tempted by many of these mega concerts either, although I do enjoy a good festival where I can sit on the grass.

I'm so glad to hear CoCo is doing better. That's the best gift of all! I think you should both go on the reality show in the Marina!

It’s a blindfolded dating show, and totes for chihuahuas - brilliant. 🐶🐶 Would consider it (ok, do it) though the main event is sold out, followed by a singles party. A dance floor night might be better than what seems to be the dead water matchlessness of my iron challenged light sensitive nocturnally productive self 😂. I just wish venues would stay open into the wee hours as in the French Quarter so I could grab take-home breakfast at dawn. I need a Mardi Gras! I need to wake up next to a straw shaped like an eggplant and be glad it’s just a straw! - The experience part of self-gifting is currently TBD. 🎊

I never cared and am not too bothered now, but I like your writing and I think "here's a quarter..." is a great line, as is "but the payphones have all disappeared ".

Thank you, Terry! I lost subscribers on this one, oops. Some people truly can't stand country music... if you have the patience, here's the song I stole the line from: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=29ebiwO4O70

Thanks for the link, Alicia. I looked it up when I read your post. You lost subscribers?? I can't stand country music either, except in small doses, but I'd never want to miss out on your writing

And I love you for that! Alas. You win some, you lose some.

I didn't care until I read your post, now I'm somewhat invested. I hope it turns out well for them.

You're back and what fun you are! Love your last line, no matter what folks think of the post.

Thank you, Mary! Everyone here is too kind. I feel a bit silly for getting in my feelings about the "unsubscribes." Just one of those weeks.

I know the feeling ... Want you back reading my memoir, love! and so glad you're feeling better.

I didn’t know the backstory between Miley and Billy Ray and I love that you shared it. I scan my emails every morning, saw your headline, and read it right then. well done.

Thank you, Claudine! I'm so glad you enjoyed it.

Well you just gained a subscriber if that helps! I loved this. I’m not even invested in the particulars of the rift, though my dad always dated women just a little older than me, so yeah. That’s never great. But reading this was a fun ride and your Scrabble message is the cutest thing ever.

Oh thank you so much, Ally! Yeah, never great indeed. Maybe I'll eventually write a follow-up on Billy Ray's latest duet with Firerose. I'd be more supportive of their marriage if the music was better... maybe I'll ask if he's really happy via Scrabble board. 😅

Fondly remember watching Hannah Montana as a kid, and have kept up with the family over the years. Heartbreaking story.

That show was such a hit! It is really heartbreaking, isn't it? You can tell they're both hurting. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for an eventual reconciliation between Miley and her father. Tish seems to be happy with her new husband and doing well. Billy Ray just seems so sad.

I love this!!! And I remember it all. But I don’t quite get the quarter reference, is it a reference to one of his songs?

Expand full comment

It's referencing the country song "Here's A Quarter, Call Someone Who Cares" by Travis Tritt. When Billy Ray won an AMA for Achy Breaky Heart (after Travis had been criticizing him in the press), he quoted that line. :)
